Snack Wholesale Basics for Small Shops

Buying snacks wholesale looks simple: buy in bulk, sell by the piece. In practice, the margin is made or lost on storage, rotation and reading the supplier's terms.

What a wholesaler does

Wholesaling is the sale of goods in bulk to retailers and other business buyers rather than to the end consumer. A wholesaler buys from manufacturers, usually at a discount, and sells on to shops, which then sell to customers at a higher price.

Questions to ask a new supplier

Rotate the stock

Stock rotation means moving the items with the earliest dates to the front so they sell first, and putting new deliveries behind them. It is the simplest way to cut waste on a snack shelf.

Start narrow

A small range that sells through is better than a wide range that goes stale. Add new lines a few at a time and keep notes on what moves.

Importing

Bringing snacks in from another country adds food-safety rules, labelling requirements and customs paperwork. These differ by country; check with the relevant authority before placing an order.
